Destinations
The higher, wetter, busier half of the plateau. Forest resorts, heated pools, Venna Lake, and the market road that never quite closes.
Mahabaleshwar sits on the western ridge and takes the monsoon head-on — which is why it is green in July when Pune is not, and why the winter nights drop to 10°C. The town is denser than Panchgani, with the market, the lake and most of the four- and five-star inventory within a two-kilometre radius.
For groups, the trade-off is straightforward: Mahabaleshwar gives you restaurants and sightseeing on foot, Panchgani gives you space and a private pool for the same money. If you are booking December or January and the pool matters, ask specifically whether it is heated — most are not.

Nearby
Almost none are. A handful of resorts run pool heating between December and February for an extra charge. We flag the ones that do on their listings — do not assume it.
Poladpur is shorter and more scenic but the Ambenali Ghat section is slow and closed to heavy traffic at night. Via Pune and Wai is longer but predictable. In monsoon, take the Pune route.
Yes, if you accept rain. The Panchgani–Bhilar–Tapola belt gets noticeably less than the western Mahabaleshwar ridge, so many monsoon travellers base themselves lower and drive up for the day.
